While there was nothing wrong with this decision, if they had received different advice, they could have upgraded to a private property in the 1980s, where the price gap wasn’t much different. Today (2024), their HDB is worth around $500,000, but if they had held onto a private property, its value would likely be at least double that amount, allowing them to retire comfortably.
